Animal products that sneak in our daily lifestyle

Many people who want to avoid animal products and by-products, such as meat, eggs, dairy, honey and leather, for ethical, environmental or health reasons, may be surprised to find out that there are many hidden animal products that sneak into their lifestyle. These animal products are often used as ingredients, additives or processing agents in various foods, cosmetics, clothing and other items. Here are some of them:

  1. Gelatin: This is a protein derived from the collagen in cow or pig bones, skin and connective tissues. It is often used as a thickening or stabilizing agent and can be found in many foods, such as candies, marshmallows, jellies, yogurts and ice creams. It can also be found in some capsules, tablets and vaccines.

  2. Carmine: This is a red dye made from the extracts of dried bodies of the cochineal insects. It is often used as a colouring agent in foods, such as candies, jams, juices and sauces. It can also be found in some cosmetics, such as lipsticks, blushes and eyeshadows.

  3. Casein: This is a protein derived from milk. It is often used as a binding or emulsifying agent and can be found in many foods, such as cheeses, breads, cakes and chocolates. It can also be found in some glues, paints and plastics.

  4. L-cysteine: This is an amino acid derived from human hair or poultry feathers. It is often used as a softening or flavouring agent and can be found in many foods, such as breads, bagels, pizzas and cookies.

  5. Isinglass: This is a gelatin-like substance collected from the bladders of freshwater fish. It is often used as a clarifying agent in beers and wines.

  6. Lanolin: This is a waxy substance derived from sheep's wool. It is often used as a moisturizing or emulsifying agent and can be found in many cosmetics, such as creams, lotions and lip balms. It can also be used to produce vitamin D3 supplements.

These are just some of the not so obvious animal products that sneak into our lifestyle. To avoid them, it is important to read the labels carefully and look for vegan-friendly alternatives. 🌱
